Geographic Distribution of MERS Coronavirus among Dromedary Camels, Africa

We found serologic evidence for the circulation of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus among dromedary camels in Nigeria, Tunisia, and Ethiopia. Circulation of the virus among dromedaries across broad areas of Africa may indicate that this disease is currently underdiagnosed in humans outside the Arabian Peninsula.

MERS Coronavirus: Current Status

In early May 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the first case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infection in the USA. Reportedly, the patient flew from Saudi Arabia to the United Kingdom (UK) and then to Chicago on April 24, before travelling by bus to Indiana. The patient started experiencing respiratory symptoms on April 27, accordin...

MERS-coronavirus: From discovery to intervention

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) still causes outbreaks despite public awareness and implementation of health care measures, such as rapid viral diagnosis and patient quarantine. Here we describe the current epidemiological picture of MERS-CoV, focusing on humans and animals affected by this virus and propose specific intervention strategies that would be appropriate to c...

Receptor usage and cell entry of bat coronavirus HKU4 provide insight into bat-to-human transmission of MERS coronavirus.

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) currently spreads in humans and causes ∼ 36% fatality in infected patients. Believed to have originated from bats, MERS-CoV is genetically related to bat coronaviruses HKU4 and HKU5. To understand how bat coronaviruses transmit to humans, we investigated the receptor usage and cell entry activity of the virus-surface spike proteins of HKU4...
